Most public conversation about artificial intelligence starts from what could go wrong. That conversation matters, and we don’t dismiss it. But a steady diet of risk, without a corresponding sense of what people can actually do, tends to produce resignation rather than agency — the sense that AI is simply happening to us, and the only available responses are fear or blind adoption.
We start somewhere else. Our work is affirmative by design: practical strategies that help people preserve human agency and human values in their work, families, and communities, developed alongside — not instead of — honest treatment of real risk.
Concretely, that means we try to connect people with tools, practices, and computational approaches that demonstrate viable ways of living and working with technology on human-centered terms, rather than only naming the ways technology can erode those terms. We think both halves are necessary. A warning without an alternative rarely changes behavior; an alternative without honesty about tradeoffs isn’t trustworthy.
This orientation shapes everything we publish here, including the pieces we choose to write, the tools we choose to recommend, and the research we choose to support. See Why We Exist for the fuller public need behind this work.
